How to Write Effective NDIS Goals

Your NDIS goals are the foundation of your plan. They determine which supports the NDIA funds and how much flexibility you have in how you use that funding. Vague or generic goals lead to underfunded plans — specific, evidence-linked goals lead to plans that reflect your real needs.

1

Be Specific

Instead of 'I want to be more independent', write 'I want to prepare two meals per week independently within 6 months.' Specific goals give NDIA planners a clear picture of your needs and make it easier to identify the right supports.

2

Focus on Outcomes

Frame goals around what you want to achieve in your life, not the supports you want to receive. 'I want to get a job' is an outcome. 'I want employment support services' is a support request. Goals come first — supports follow.

3

Align with Your Life Areas

The NDIS groups goals across life areas: daily activities, social and community participation, employment and education, health and wellbeing, and home and living. Cover the areas most important to you — the more comprehensively your goals reflect your life, the better your plan funding will be.

4

Use Evidence

Connect your goals to functional evidence from your allied health team. An OT report that describes your difficulties preparing meals makes the goal 'I want to cook independently' credible and fundable. Without evidence, even well-written goals may not receive funding.

What Happens If I Don't Have Good Goals?

The quality of your NDIS goals has a direct impact on your funding. Planners use your goals to justify the supports they include in your plan. If your goals are vague — “I want to live a better life” or “I want support” — the planner has limited grounds to fund specific services. Plans built on weak goals are often underfunded and harder to challenge at review.

Poorly written goals can also restrict your flexibility. Some funding in NDIS plans is “stated” — meaning it is locked to a specific purpose — when it could have been left flexible if the goal had been framed differently. A support coordinator or experienced OT can help you frame goals in ways that maximise your plan's value and the range of supports you can access. Don't go into your planning meeting without goals prepared in writing.

Goal-Setting Tips from Support Coordinators

  • 1Write your goals before the planning meeting, not during it. Planning meetings move quickly and it's easy to feel pressured or forget important things. Arriving with written goals gives you control.
  • 2Think about where you want to be in 12 months, not just the supports you want. NDIA planners respond to life outcomes — employment, independence, relationships, health — more than lists of services.
  • 3Review last year's goals before your plan review. Were they achieved? If not, why? This helps you build stronger goals for the next plan and provides evidence for any funding increases.
  • 4Involve your family, carers, and allied health team in writing goals. An OT or speech pathologist may identify important functional goals you haven't thought of — and their documentation makes those goals credible.
  • 5Don't limit yourself to 3 goals. The NDIS does not cap the number of goals in your plan. More well-evidenced goals across multiple life areas generally leads to a more comprehensive and well-funded plan.
